"Tempe is the food of hope from Indonesia
for the world"

Indonesian Tempe Movement is a movement/non-profit organization that aims to increase national and international awareness of tempe as:​

  1. Healthy food

    • Nutritious: same amount and quality of protein compared to beef, low in fat, no saturated fat, no cholesterol, good source of fiber, excellent source of calcium, source of iron and zinc, source of essential Vitamin B12, prebiotics, paraprobiotics, and anti-cancer isoflavones.

    • Thus good for body-building, menopausal syndrome, and gut health for babies, youths, elders, and vegans.

  2. Sustainable protein source

    • Compared to beef: 10% energy usage, 20% carbon dioxide emission, 20 times more land efficient.

  3. Affordable protein source

    • up to only 4% the price of beef (in Indonesia).

The movement promotes campaigns in many ways: social business incubation program, international conferences, workshops, tempe-making classes, and social media campaigns.

Initiator

The scientist-entrepreneur grandfather, also The Indonesian Father of Food Science and Technology, initiated the International Conference on Tempe 2015, inspiring the beginning of Tempe Movement.

The scientist-entrepreneur mom co-founded the official movement with her son Driando in 2015 and has been focusing on the social entrepreneurship and food diplomacy aspects in running Tempe Movement.

The scientist-entrepreneur son founded the International Youth Conference on Tempe 2015 and co-founded the official movement with his mom Wida in 2015 and has been focusing on international food diplomacy, social media, and scientific education in running Tempe Movement.

In 2017, Mike started the movement in Rockwood with Willie, Oregon, by conducting a multinational tempeh culinary festival linking local and Indonesia government representatives, local chefs, and community members. His persistence resulted in Tempe Movement progressing towards a 501c3 non-profit organization.

Willie inspired his community members in Rockwood, Oregon, to join the tempeh festival and celebration with Mike in 2017. Having made the mind-blowing tempeh orek/kecap/kering granolas and stepped on the land of tempeh (Bayat, Klaten, Central Java, Indonesia), Willie is our Fresh Prince of Protein.
